China Cove Beach

$10.00 per vehicle day-use fee (buses $100.00/day); day-use hours are sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, year-round.

China Cove Beach has no lifeguards on duty (only West End Beach, on the opposite/west shore of Donner Lake, has American Red Cross lifeguards). Donner Lake itself is a calm, current-free mountain lake (not a river), which favors young swimmers, but it is deep (up to 238 ft at its deepest point per Wikipedia/USGS-sourced data) and cold, so adults should supervise closely and keep kids near shore; no source confirms the specific entry slope (sandy shelf vs. drop-off) at China Cove itself.

No significant hike is required. The swimming area is close to parking and access.

Fee is paid at the park entrance station covering the day-use area; the official park page does not describe a separate dedicated lot just for China Cove Beach, so parking is the shared state-park day-use lot(s).

California State Parks states Donner Lake 'is open to both power and sail boats' and that the park itself has no boat launch ramp (nearby public launch access is via the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District). An on-site outfitter, Donner Lake Watersports, rents motor boats and 'paddle sports' craft directly from a location inside Donner Memorial State Park. No no-wake or electric-only restriction was found in the sources checked.

Summer (roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day), when park restrooms are open and the three campgrounds (Ridge, Splitrock, Creek) operate; the park sits at about 6,000 ft elevation with summer daytime highs around 75°F and nights dropping into the low 40s.

Dogs are not allowed on China Cove Beach (or in the visitor center or on the half-mile Nature Trail). Elsewhere in the park dogs must be on a six-foot leash. Food, beverages, and toiletries must be stored in provided food lockers. Charcoal and wood fires are prohibited in day-use areas.
