🏊Swimming at Commons Beach

Swimming here is casual lake swimming off a mixed sand-and-grass shoreline with a rocky lakebed in places (water shoes are recommended). The water is clear but cold even in summer, and Lake Tahoe can produce sudden wind and wave conditions. The spot is established enough to host the organized open-water 'Tahoe City Swim' race (part of the Sierra Open Water Series) with half-mile, 1.2-mile, and 2.4-mile courses just offshore, making it suitable for both casual family wading/swimming near shore and serious open-water swimmers.

📍How to get to this swimming hole

Located at 400 North Lake Boulevard in downtown Tahoe City, about 0.4 miles from the town center, directly on the Lake Tahoe shoreline with lake-level parking areas and on-street parking nearby.

Parking: Parking is available at lake level near the beach, near Mackinaw Street, and on the street, but spots are limited and metered; parking is especially difficult during the Thursday farmers market (May-October).

🥾The walk in

No real hike here. The water is a short walk from where you park. Commons Beach sits directly on North Lake Boulevard in downtown Tahoe City; it's a flat, under-5-minute walk from any of the adjacent parking areas to the water, with a paved multi-use path running along the shoreline. No trail or hike is needed.

📜Backstory

The beach's sand is not naturally occurring; it was trucked in. Lake Tahoe is recognized as an Outstanding Natural Resource Water, and visitors are asked to help protect it from pollution and aquatic invasive species.
