Backstory

Pymatuning Reservoir originated from an 1868 legislative survey to drain the Pymatuning Swamp; a severe 1913 flood led to the 1931 Pymatuning Act funding dam construction. Governor Gifford Pinchot broke ground in 1931, and roughly 7,000 workers completed the 2,400-foot earthen dam (max height 50 ft) over three years, primarily for flood control and regulating flow into the Shenango and Beaver Rivers. The CCC's Camp NP-11-PA, established in 1935, built much of the park's early infrastructure. A stone gatehouse on the dam, guarded during WWII, now hosts summer weddings.
