Swimming takes place at a managed, sand day-use beach on Olson Lake with volleyball nets and a concession stand selling snacks, ice cream, and beach toys. There are no lifeguards on duty, so the park requires that anyone under 16 be accompanied by someone 16 or older; food is not allowed on the beach itself (a picnic table is provided just outside it).

📍How to get to this swimming hole

Rock Cut State Park's main entrance is on IL Route 173, about one mile west of Interstate 90 near Loves Park; the park's internal roads and site map lead to a dedicated Olson Lake beach and parking area, separate from the Pierce Lake day-use and fishing areas.

Parking: Dedicated on-site parking at the beach, part of the park's mix of paved (asphalt) and gravel lots; the park provides accessible parking spaces in multiple day-use locations.

🥾The walk in

No real hike here. The water is a short walk from where you park. Olson Beach is a drive-up day-use beach with its own dedicated parking lot immediately adjacent to the sand and water; no trail hike is needed to reach the swimming area, just a short walk (well under 5 minutes) from car to beach.

📜Backstory

The park takes its name from 1859 railroad-cut blasting for the Kenosha-Rockford rail line; Pierce Lake was later formed by damming Willow Creek, and remnants of the old railroad grade are still visible along Willow Creek below the spillway. Olson Lake is a separate, smaller (50-acre) lake within the same park, reserved for swimming and non-motorized/electric-only boating.
