Backstory
The property began in the mid-1800s as lakefront cabins and a steamship landing developed by Curtis Babb; his son Nelson Babb expanded it into an amusement park with a dance hall, bathhouse, boathouse, and a lake-platform merry-go-round. The dance hall drew big-name acts (Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Kay Kyser) and hosted up to 3,000 weekend patrons at its 1930s peak; during the Depression an arcade was added and the hall converted for roller skating, which continued until 1997. Hurricane Diane damaged waterfront facilities in 1955. The Town of Suffield acquired the property from the Babb family in 1977, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 12, 2006.
